Do-It-Yourself Data Tinkering: Adapting Spatial Data for Local Use

Presenter: Kori Blankenship, The Nature Conservancy

What do you do if you’re a land manager who needs consistent, current, cross-boundary datasets, but the available data do not meet your needs? Modify them. In this webinar, Kori Blankenship, fire ecologist with The Nature Conservancy, will discuss how to adjust spatial data to make them meet your needs using examples from the LANDFIRE Program.

LANDFIRE’s suite of vegetation and fire-related datasets is useful for many land management analyses, but because they are designed for regional and national application, they may not meet the needs of individuals working at finer scales. Armed with clear objectives, an understanding of the data and time to make changes, most analysts can locally calibrate their spatial data. Kori will cover the process, techniques and tools for DIY data tinkering. There will be plenty of time for discussion following the presentation; please bring your questions and experiences to share. For more information on this topic see the recently released guide: Modifying LANDFIRE Geospatial Data for Local Applications by Don Helmbrecht and Kori Blankenship that can be found here:
